It started in 2009 as a “casual” get-together of veteran Dover drag racers. Now, it has mushroomed into The Northeast’s Premier Nostalgic Drag racing event. The inaugural race, held at Island Dragway, was a one-day affair that attracted 97 original drivers and their cars. In 2011, the race was moved to Lebanon Valley Dragway, in West Lebanon, New York, and it really gained momentum. Now, the excitement continues for three-full days, with new features added every year. Fans can expect to see over 300 cars compete on the quarter-mile each year in the seven Nostalgia eliminators on Sunday, and the stands are packed. Friday and Saturday boast plenty of action, as racers Test & Tune, along with several Nostalgia groups holding their own points racing. Saturday also features a “Gambler’s Race.” During the three days, fans can take in all the vendor’s booths with a variety of collectibles and popular parts and pieces for sale. Plus, original, restored, and re-created vintage race cars will be on display. Sunday’s action features Final Eliminations on track, along with our big Rod & Custom Show (pre 1980), Swap Meet, and the “Drag Alley” Vintage Race Car Display. It’s a genuine “Blast from the Past,” as all cars competing are 1976 or earlier. Spectators are also treated to 200mph Funny Cars, Extreme Altereds, Front-Engine Dragsters (in exhibition), “Heads-Up” match racing, Supercharged Gassers, and nostalgic Pro Mods round out the featured performances. Our Match Race action will include the East Coast Nostalgic Funny Car Syndicate, The East Coast Fuelers, Hot Rods From Hell, and the AA/Supercharged Gassers of America. It’s all about keeping the Dover Drag Strip memories alive. The Dover was located just about an hour south of Lebanon Valley Dragway. Opened in 1961, it was one of the very first professional drag racing facilities in the Northeast region, with a timing tower, public-address system, high-traction asphalt, and the latest in timing equipment. Like all the early tracks across the country, Dover Drag Strip’s mission was to provide a safe place to race and eliminate dangerous street racing. The track adopted rules and regulations introduced by the National Hot Rod Association. In the early ‘60s, Dover attracted racers and fans from eight neighboring states. Many of the sport’s famous “touring racers” competed at Dover, including Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits (four times), “T.V. Tommy” Ivo, Connie Kalitta “The Bounty Hunter,” and Shirley “Cha-Cha” Muldowney. Jet Cars and Wheelstanders wowed the crowds, and a (then) new class, Factory Experimentals later morphed into the Funny Car. And yes, the crowds went wild. More history can be found at the www.doverdragstrip.com history page and in its active forum. The site also has over 5,000 archived “all Dover” photos in its “Galleries,” found at the top right of the homepage. Sadly, due to multiple reasons, Dover Drag Strip closed in 1976. But it lives again every year, with many original racers on hand. Crowd favorite Eliminator Brackets (on Sunday) include the popular Gasser Eliminator and 4-Speed Eliminator. There’s even “DOT Eliminator” for street-legal weekend cruisers. … See more
