Dino,
Stratford Rambler,
I just noticed they ran a car in SS/F in 1968.
And on July 14, 1968, they won Super Stock Eliminator in SS/F.
Ran a 12.17 @ 117 MPH.
Now the S/S AMX cars came out in 1969….
What did they run,,,,I’m guessing a 68′ AMX 390/315 HP car..???
pc
hi paul, stratford rambler, “top of the hill” barnum ave. the car was called “THE CHUCKER” if thats the same car. it “MIGHT” have been a javelin, not an amx. ed vagnini drove it. he did good with it.
Pete,,,,
I did some checking…….
The 1968 Javelin did come through with a 390/315HP engine.
Most customers ordered the 68′ AMX with the 390,,,,,,but the Javelin was lighter.
Very few of the Javelin cars were ordred with a 390.
Did find one on the internet,,,,,,from the 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals.
The ‘Viti Brothers’, ran in SS/FA, with a 390 Javelin.
1968,,,,,SS/F class had a weight break of 9.48 and up wt/hp.
SS/F was the last S/S class in 1968.
pc,,,,,,,,,,Pete,, you know your stuff… 😉
HI PAUL,i wish i could be more helpful. what i do remember is that a friend of mines girlfriend got a brand new javelin at that dealer and ” THE CHUCKER” was in the show room. must have been wintertime. another amc story is that sometime in t he early 70’s i converted an AMX to a 4 speed from automatic for a customer.had to go to dealer and buy most of the parts.i see your posts on classracer.com you really get into it. keep up the good work!
Pete,,,,,,,
Thanks for the compliment,,,,,,,,,,I like to ‘dot the I’s and cross the T’s,,, 😉
Found out, the Viti Brothers were from Middletown, Rhode Island…
Ran the 68′ Javelin 390/315HP in SS/FA in 1968 too.
They must have hit Dover a couple of times…
I remember when there were a couple of AMC dealerships around in Northern Westchester,,,,and Putnam.
Geis Buick/Rambler in Shrub Oak was the biggest,,,,
Bill Geis Jr. tried to get a 69’ S/S AMX car,,,,,,,,,,but was shut-out..
Paul
PAUL,i found a pic of the ‘CHUCKER’ in the terry o,shea, gallery #1, of course i can’t post it . DINO,help please.
Dino and Tom,,,,,
That’s the car,,,,,,,,a 1968 Javelin 390/315HP,,,,,,,,
SS/F running 12.17’s back in 1968,,,,,,,,,,,and winning big time.
Running right on the National Record…turning back Z-28 Camaro’s, 440 GTX’s and Olds 4-4-2’s.
All done through a little Carter AFB (625 CFM) carburetor.
Little known fact, Carter Carburetor came out with the new and better flowing 625CFM AVS carburetors in 1968.
But American Motors, got a deal from Carter on the leftover 1967 Model AFB carburetors (Carter surplus supply),
and used them on the 68′ cars.
By the way, great photo find…. 😀
Paulie
Hi All;
Just a little more information about the Viti Javelin that ran at Dover as previously mentioned…
Viti Bros. was a Rambler Dealer in Middletown, RI. and the Viti Javelin as mentioned was sponsored by them as well; the car itself was built and ran by the team of Bill Zerbus and Frank Pine…Bill was the primary wrench and Frank was the driver. My dad Bill was the Service Manager and Frank was a Rambler Tech for the Viti Dealership. They would thrash wrenches, parts and test
all week long after work and on Saturday and then run on Sundays…I was between 5 to 8 years old and was there for all of it througout the 3 years of Viti/AMC sponsored racing…the wives and kids were there too! Some of the best times of my life with the some of the finest people anyone could have ever known.
By the way, it is no small coincidence that the ’70 Rebel Machine looked like the red, white and blue 67 Rebel with the GTO hood tach as pictured!
Welcome Aboard Jon…we had quite a few amc racers .WE have A lot of stuff here …just search it out….Heres one for ya !:
