ANOTHER CLUB IS FOUND ! …just got this !

I’ve been cruisin’ round the town now with the guys for quite a while
We been thinkin’ ’bout starting up a club that shows some class and style
And we’ll get the finest cars
We got a Deuce Coupe, a Stingray, a rail job and an XKE
        (We’ll start a car club)
We’ll be the fastest at the drags, man, we’ll really cut some low ETs
        (We’ll start a car club)
And wipe out the other clubs
We’ll set a meet, and get a sponsor, and collect some dues
And you can bet that we’ll have our jackets on wherever we cruise
We’ll get the roughest and the toughest initiation we can find
        (We’ll start a car club)
And if you want to try to get in we’ll really put you through the grind
        (We’ll start a car club)
        This club’s the very best
We’ll set a meet, and get a sponsor, and collect some dues
And you can bet that we’ll have our jackets on wherever we cruise
We’ll get the roughest and the toughest initiation we can find
        (We’ll start a car club)
And if you want to try to get in we’ll really send you through the grind
        (We’ll start a car club)
        This club’s the very best
        …………………………………….Beach Boys “We’ll Start A Car Club”

“The Candlewood Customs were a group of friends from Brookfield. The above song lyrics best describes where we were coming from (yeah, right!). Our existence was short and our impact on the sport of drag racing was nil…but it was a big deal for us. We all graduated high school in ’64 and the club disbanded. Some went to work, some went into the service, and some went to college. Two of them are still my best friends. One of the club members went on to be an engineer for Chrysler. His car, a flathead powered D/Altered, was the cornerstone of club racing. The video I have is made from an old 8mm shot in ’62 or ’63. I did a lot of wrenching on the car, and some of the driving. We did OK, mostly because this was not a hotly contested class! Dover awarded merchandise or trophy, and we usually took the spark plugs or whatever we could use. The one trophy I did take was left under Little Frankie’s name on “The Wall”. So…, an old Dover trophy and a reunion pit pass are part of the “Wall Collection”. (VietNam Wall in Washnigton) I will send a picture of my club shirt. As was the tradition of the time, it is a bowling shirt with my name chainstitched on the front. I will send the VHS of the Candlewood Customs at Dover as soon as I make a backup.”

The Candlewood Customs ran a D/Altered.

Heres the actual time slip from August 9, 1964
IWe usually took mechandise (plugs, etc.) rather than trophies.
For some reason we took that trophy.
30+ years later I left that trophy in front of Panel 37E of the Vietnam Wall.
This time slip is not dated, but it matches the published results. I didn’t know when my last run at Dover was, but this was it, August 9, 1964. I do remember shearing teeth off first gear during time trials, draining the gearbox with the hope of getting the teeth out, and launching in second for the rest of the day. The day (and my Dover driving days) ended in the usual way – with a loss to Charlie B. in Comp Eliminator. roxrec
