I just got off the phone with Bob Ida, a long-time friend of mine who lives in New Jersey. I just happened to ask him if he ever raced at Dover, and he said, “Yeah, I used to run my Gasser there.”
They have a shop on Texas Road in Morganville, New Jersey, and do a variety of trick stuff, fabrication, turn-key cars, CNC machining, electronic tuning, and they have a four-wheel Dyno Jet chassis dyno.
I met him and his son, Rob, when I was doing Street Rodder, as they used to build some of the baddest Willys street rods on the planet. Anyway, he’s gonna check out the site. See? Here I am all the way out in California . . . just spreading the love.
I remember the Ida Automotive car. (Which is pretty amazing considering how little I used to pay attention to chevy gasssers!)
Good call, Stormy . . . I think one of his Gassers had a 409 in it. Actually, he moved to Morganville so he’d be close to Englishtown. His dad was the first Tucker dealer in New York State.
In the last several years, Bob has run his son’s wild, twin-turbo pickup at Maxon and Bonneville. Great guy.
DoverCsi California Division …Hey…got more photos of this in ODF ! I’ll check the ‘Vault” AND gonna move this to “Where Are They Now”….Dino
You’re such a tease! I called Bob this morning and told him there was a cool photo of his car at “The Fast Track” posted here and he was jazzed. As soon as the dust settles at Ida Automotive and his CNC machine stops spitting out chips, he’ll be checking in and ponying up for membership in ODF.
Bill and I were just talking today about making a trip to maxon to see if it looks like enough fun to build something to run there.
Bob can give you the skinny on Maxon . . . he’s hauled ass there.
MAXTON with a T….,N.C —just outside Laurinburg…near Me ….Land Speed Record runs at Airport There ! easily acessable off I-95 (take NC74)

Ok ….Back to Bob ……If ya’ll want to visit Maxton …I’ll Meet ya there and start a new Topic…Same weekend usually as Auto Fair at Charlotte, at the big Nascar Track. About BOB IDA: Anybody have more photos ? I serch the intire ODF Galleries and came up 0 …will now go thru the Eastern Drag News copys I have.
Don’t know why Bob hasn’t signed on/up yet. He must be “making chips” with the CNC machine. When I told him about the Dover Reunions, he said he’d take a ride up in his Willys. I gave him the idea of having “Dover Dyno Day” at his shop, where for a modest fee, you’d get a couple of chassis dyno pulls, maybe some fine tuning, and lunch. Bob’s a wizard with late-model and early stuff. Hopefully, he’ll surface here.
