Casey… At The Track
By Maso
There was a place at Dover where the Gas Coupes came to play…
And Mighty Casey came there with his “Pumpkin” all the way…
From Yonkers where the “Hot Shots” all tore up the county’s grass parkway…
But cops made them uncomfortable there and they had to find another way.
Now, the Scarsdale crowd was ready with that ratty Plymouth Coupe…
The Street Eliminators of the Champion Speed Shop group…
Then Tommy Blake lined up there with his hairy “39”…
But got caught eating a great big fat “Hoagie”… on the starting line.
Then Castaldo got his chance and everything looked right…
Until he popped his clutch and put on a mean red light…
And Prokop dropped his drive shaft and his U-Joints all popped out…
And now it’s time for the Yonkers boys to figure all this out.
Now… the Mighty Casey’s pitted and his motor it won’t start…
But we got to get him running or we don’t look very smart…
We got all these parts right here that we can’t use anyway…
Better get those wrenches turning if… we’re gonna’ save this day.
By now the “Weirdo’s” calling…”Attention in the pits”…
If it’s Street Eliminator that you’re wanting… better make it quick…
Just then the “Pumpkin” started with Casey at the wheel…
With the Yonkers boys standing by, and this time it’s all for real.
With “Pumkin” tires burning through that staging place…
The Mighty Casey digs in with that grin upon his face…
With one grip on his four-speed and the other at the wheel…
Something’s about to happen… for now it’s time to deal.
They both dialed in their numbers…their classes weren’t the same…
That is just the way we play this crazy drag strip game…
The “Pumpkin” and the Plymouth lined up at the tree…
Al Pop’s finger on the button… nothing more to say.
Casey’s “Pumpkin” got off first and running very fine…
And the Plymouth followed through coming from behind…
But that Plymouth couldn’t catch him when they crossed that finish line…
He sez…Victory here is what I want, and now I think it’s mine.
Now… somewhere along that parkway to the east and to the west…
There is a sun a-shining and it’s raining on the rest…
We checked it on our Chrondek’s and we see there is no doubt…
There is no sun in Yonkers, the Mighty Casey did break out…!
THIS IS JUST Incredible! A poem to the format of the famous Mighty Casey literary icon. MASO must stay up late at night and have some interesting things in “his Footlocker” …Maso —-> Got to send it to Billy…. I’ll print it and send snail-mail !
The “Casey At The Bat” poem of 1888 was a rather sophomoreic ditty written by a guy named Ernest Thayer. He wrote that to the rhythm of the “Battle Hymn of The Republic” but without the chorus and I have followed that. His was 13 stanzas but mine will probably be for only about 9 or 10 when I am finished with it.
I am setting up a rivalry on both sides of the Bronx River Parkway and ends up at Dover with the “Mighty Casey” “Breaking Out” instead of “Striking Out”… I know that is not the way we raced then but I have my poetic licence. The Thayer poem has a “Jimmy Blake”… so naturally I had to factor in our own Tommy Blake who was not from Yonkers, but that’s “licence” again.
I’m having fun with it, I hope you like it…!
Sent To Billy this morning …..going to his house .
What am imagination. If there is someone that can come up with something unusual it would be Maso.
That’s pretty interesting twist on the Casey story and I hope our Casey likes it as much as we did.
Hay… It could be verse…!
If that line puzzles you it just means this:
A “Hoagie” ( a rather large sandwich ) is used here symbolically as an object of “distraction”. It’s just a cartoon like image of a driver ( Blake… ) being distracted at the starting line and loosing a race.
‘Nuther words…
If a guy looses a race because of a bad reaction time, one might say… “He got caught eating a big fat hoagie on the starting line”
Terrific poem. 😀 Don’t suppose Maso’s imagination was fueled by some of the “second hand” stuff he ingested in the “SKUM Years”?????? 😆 😆
That is nonsence.
The Skum scenario is all fiction anyway.
Hey …guys …scroll back up to the poem….Maso Added some details !
I have COREL Paint Shop Pro X2 – Ultimate software here on my hard drive. It is a poor man’s Adobe Photo Shop.
Bump
Well…
Sadly, we lost our hero. There are people grieving over this from California to Sweden and from New England to South Florida.
Now… somewhere along that parkway to the east and to the west…
There is a sun a-shining and it’s raining on the rest…
We checked it on our Chrondek’s and we see there is no doubt…
There is no sun in Yonkers, the Mighty Casey did break out…!
Well…
It’s been five years now since we lost our friend Billy Casey.
😐
It is hard to believe it has been five years already. RIP Billy.
I’d bet he is watching us and likes the idea we remember him.
Not 5 years guys……. 😥 …Do the numbers……How about 3 years……..
