So Pat sends me some of the earliest coverage of the MG ,he restored….Just some of the New “OLD” magazine features on Dover Cars that are fortunatly being found and submitted. This build story was about the MG . Owner Dave Daly and friend Lonnie Camileri removing hood. Car is brand new in 1962… magazine issue Feb 63- Speed & Custom.
No doubt Pat has resurrected a classic and legendary piece of drag racing ‘history!!! I admire the ‘detailed’ work he performed in the restoration, but most of all I give him 100% credit for the ‘fruits of his labor’,blasting it down the 1/4 mile also!!! Congrats Pat! Thank you for sharing these photos and memorbilia on ‘Baby Torque’, Pete.
Got to add this from another topic to keep everything together . Use search to find plenty more…try “Baby Torque” …I stumbled over this shot searching the internet and dug deep into someone’s photo gallery, and Pat Responded with:
“All I can say is “WOW” and thats a young Ray Kobel in the drivers seat. They didn’t win but where in good company in 1964 at Indy. As the story goes the motor broke a few weeks before Indy the cam got bent or damaged. It was sent back to Racer Brown and repaired or reground they put it all back together and may have run it at Dover before leaving for the Nats, Dover gave Dave and Willie some money to go. They got to Indy and made some time trials but the car never ran the low elevens it was running before the motor broke. Story goes the Isky rep was there selling or giving cams to certain customers and he had cams in his car Well when they ran back at Dover with the new Isky 555 Super LeGerra cam they ran right around the national record. The Racer Brown cam was never right and wond up in the garbage.”
MG was built in Willies garage in 4 days and nights non-stop for Dave Daly. After finishing they all went out to Westhampton pic.2 tech inspection. Dig the pie crust white walls and square roll bar. On the first day out they discovered a cracked block it was a 283 bored to 327, 4″.Picture #5 was taken by me at Westhampton after the won the eliminator circa 1963.
Pat
Pat …when ya took the picture, how old were you? AND what were Your duties on Race Day?
Dino I was 14. I would clean the car and polish the “american mags” (rear) I pulled the plugs out, ran errands and brought the car in tow back on the return road. I hung out at the shop all week long getting them coffee or lunch when not in school.
Pat
Pat,no doubt you had an ‘obsession’ for ‘Baby Torque’ since it’s birth! And we can only imagine what it was like for you when opportunity knocked to actually buy and ‘own’ it!!! Your probably still pinching your self if this is for real? I know it took a lot of blood, sweat, tears, not to mention $$$ to bring it back ‘better’ than before. Now sit back and enjoy the past and present memories that continue on!!! Again,THANKS for sharing the ‘good ole days’ photos! LUV this stuff!!! :geek: 😮 😀 Pete.
Huh…You were the “BABY” sitter back then and now the Proud Uncle!
Hey VB nice picture 😛 😛 😛 I had just gotten the car a week before I brought it to Marcus Dairy. We took a picture next to the US Mule, that was the last time the car was seen in public before going out west. Boy that was 1997 I didn’t do anything on it until 2007. It took the death of my friends Ray Kobel and Frank Cali so light a fire under my ass 🙄
Pat
I remember that day Pat at Marcus with your M.G. I too took a picture of it with your son standing next to it with a towel in his hand, wiping it off. Can’t believe where that time went?
