three story tower….return road goes through it…..covered grandstands…raised ,behind line grandstands, with Hot Pit staging going under it….and even a McDonalds in the pits .

If Chet and Joe were still alive today,and the gas crunch didn’t happen,I firmly believe Dino,your sketch of Dover ‘2012’ would have been a ‘reality’ had someone like you pushed the issue.what they would have gained updating the ‘strip’ and it be going just as strong today! Howie Commander,owner of Lebanon Valley,always favored the roundy round racers over the drags.For years it stayed the same with no updates.I hated running there for time trials back then,as the track was coated with Saturday night dirt from the stock cars,and consistacy was a mind boggler ,when it came to dialing in your time.By then,the track was heated up after lunch and traction alot better.Here’s my point;someone (don’t remember who) convinced Howie to update the drag track,buy more shutdown property to handle 300+ mph drag cars,have a camping area for big events,and he would manage the strip for Howie,relieving him of running just running the stock car track (don’t get me wrong,Howie does like drag cars also).This guy who ran the dragstrip,(sadly) passed away a few years back.I have no idea who manages today,however,for those of you who remembered what it looked like back in the 60’s and 70’s,they’ve come a ‘LONG WAY ‘ BABY! And the results speak for themselves,built in mind for us drag racers (old and new).

Also,I – 684 outta White Plains would’nt end in Brewster,N.Y.!No No, I-684 would merge with Rt 22 and be a 4 lane interstate through to I-90 to Albany!With an exit ,oh say exit # 45W for N.Y.cnty rt21W Wingdale!Pay your toll and drive by the hotel district and convention centers and auto dealerships then another off ramp up the hill to the strip!Sign would say welcome to Dover Drag Strip our 50th year of drag racing established 1961!!!!You would have your choice of staying in your motor home on site or hotels like The Mariott in the parking lot!Airstrip would be on the south side of NYcnty rt21!
Track personel would have housing on the lake next to the track walking distance from the race trac garage area!!
Marty, got anymore of that “goodstuff ” from the 60’s???

Dino,just picking your brain; do you remember when you worked the tower at Dover,what was the ‘fastest’ speed either a ‘rail’ or ‘funnycar’ clocked (without crashing of course),mph ? My guess would be just a tinge over 200 mph?

Shott cracked 200 a couple of times. Problem was …our ancient timimg equipment “Averaged” things…so it was 197 then 201. Mike had a conversion chart after getting a “Factor” from the readout. Then later the Chrondeks came in . They gave you exact …but remember, you had two beams for mph…before and after the finish line…and it was always an average of the time to go from first to second . We didn’t have a weekly Drag Times (It folded) when the Chrondeks arrived , so no printed results are available.Gotta get everyones memory jogged to try to remember 200+ runs.

Ok Fans…We did have Funnies that cracked 200…But the ‘jist’ of this topic was…”What If’ ? The property is still under consideration by present owner to be ‘developed’ into housing…Economy and slow rebuilding of Old Hospital facility into retirement community,might have slowed down his plans for some sort of Town ‘rebirth’….still the shut down pavement is still there…for now. From what I hear from the Locals that lived there all thier life….the town has a large influx of ‘outsiders’ that have migrated in. Not Too many oldsters left. Most Newbees, not awhere there was ever a track there!
