My thoughts go out to Billy’s family and friends.
The Super Pumpkin 57 made such an impact on my life back in the seventies that it steered the course of my hobby to this day. I am so thankful that through the hospitality of this forum I was able to finally ‘chat’ to Billy and exchange stories and even film with him. His influence will always live on.
I did not know Billy in the early days at Dover and met him for the first time at the 2009 Dover Race. As I looked at the video that Bobby took, Speed had a smile on that entire day and spoke with everyone old friends and new aquaintences. I had seen him a few morer times since then and he came over to the MG a few times and we talked about how it was running compared to last year, he was truly interested and I believe he enjoyed seeing the car running again. It also helped that John Gunn was with me as those two where old friends. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know Billy even for the short time that it was. When you leave this life you should go with the knowledge that when you spent your time here you always treated people fairly and with respect, Billy has a smile on his face now because of the people he touched, friends that he had and legacy he left.
God bless you Speed Casey.

Send him off in style…I wish I could Be There.
Now… somewhere along that parkway to the east and to the west…
There is a sun a-shining and it’s raining on the rest…
We checked it on our Chrondek’s and we see there is no doubt…
There is no sun in Yonkers, the Mighty Casey did break out…!
Billy Casey was a close buddie of mine form about 1962 untill about 1965. We didn’t live very far from each other. A real charactor, Billy was one of those guys who simply refused to take anything seriously…! I remember him as a practical joker and a bit of a clown. His love for hot rodding consumed him. Blly and I would have graduated together at the Roosevelt High School if I hadn’t left the public school system in my 5th. grade for private schools. Some of his jokes weren’t so funny, like the time I foolishly hopped up on the running board on the passanger side of his red ’40 Ford sedan on Pondfield Rd. West and Billy took off with me hanging on for life… Scared the Sh*t outta’ me…! He bought that car from Les Madaus’ cousin Billy Madaus.
Billy and his family lived just on the west ( left ) side of the Bronx River Parkway in the picture above and just a little south of where that picture was taken, that’s why I used that. You could see the parkway from his front door.
V-Bob…Good Choice of song . . . .”Did you ever know that you’re my hero,
and everything I would like to be?”
😥
JUST IN FROM PETER LILJA in Sweden:
” just got the word that Billy has past away. I can´t express the sadness I feel, hearing this news. I was so hoping to get the Pumpkin ready, for him and all others to enjoy. I really hope the restoration gets started again soon. Thank you for keeping me posted. Peter”
I was fortunate enough to hang out with Billy in and around Yonkers and Bronxville as teenagers. He always made me laugh at one of his stories or some “inside joke” of ours.
Will miss you,Speed. Godspeed. 😥
I was lucky to have been reunited with Billy at the first
Island race in 2009. I regret all the years that we were apart.
When we did meet, it was like there was no lost time. Billy
never forgot his friends. My sincere thoughts and prayers go
out to the Casey family. Rest in Peace my dear friend !
Frank…
Since I first went to the Drag Races at Dover, and then when I started racing there in 1966, Bill Casey and his “Super Pumpkins” were special to me. I always felt that Billy was one of my hero’s, and still feel like it today. I was privileged to have dinner with Billy and his brother Bobby while we were in New Jersey for the 2nd Annual Dover Race. Maso and I were in our room contemplating what to do for dinner, when the phone rang. It was Billy, wanting to know if we would like to go somewhere with him and Bobby for dinner. We went down the road a ways to a nice little Italian Restaurant, and had a very nice meal, and great conversation, a lot of then and some of now. I will miss him. Billy reminded me a lot of my Dad, who passed away almost 8yrs ago. Same sense of humor, same outlook on life, and the most striking thing was the willingness to help anyone, anytime, anywhere. My prayers go out to the Casey family. Goodbye Billy, say hi to my Dad. …………..Mikey 😥 😥
