Just got a call from THE Man of Funny Car and Fueler Custom Paint Fame ….Bob Gerdes. His shop in Lyndehurst,N.J. was responsible for most of the East Coast Trick paint up until ’79 on all your favorite Funnys and Fuelers ! …. including all the East coast California “transplants’ and Touring cars that camped out here on the East Coast in the Summers . Jungle Jim and all the rest ! BUT GET THIS…who would Know ?—-> Bob raced at Dover himself in ’61 & ’62. 😯 He ran a Black ‘brand new’ ’61 Ford fastback with red wheels ,in ’61 ,that had “Bad News’ on the front fender, in SS/S. In ’62 he had a Red ’62 Ford with a class front nd and chrome wheels. HE’S Looking for PHOTOS of his old Racers ! …He’s come to the right place. He now resides in Salem.N.Y up past Lebanon.
I speak to Gerdes every few weeks, and always come away marveling over each experience. Gerdes is the quintessential “Been There Done That” guy. The last time we talked, I asked him a few questions for Part 2 of my “Funny Car Evolution — From Stone Age to Space Age” story. The guy’s a true American Classic!

Bob painted my car, ( The Italian Stallion )BB/FC I had Kenny Youngblood do a rendering for me to show Marks Toys what the car would look like, “they had there own color scheme” after the deal with them terminated i took the Youngblood rendering to Bob, and he repainted the car and lettered it, When I went to pick up the car I forgot to get the rendering, and Bob took care of it for 30 years, when I finally found him He sent me the Rendering and didn’t even charge me for the shipping. Thanks Bob, you are a class act, and one hell of a painter. Gene Terenzio Sr.
