As always…one topic, generates more historical connections. Don Gallant just called…”Connecticuts Pioneer Dragger” 83 years old and sharp as a tack.Speaking about Frank Marratta, he recalls it was HIM,that took Frank to his first Drag Race. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?….Mark ‘Smokey” Mastrianni took Chet Anderson to his first Drag Race. Smokey & Chet at Montgomery….Don & Frank At the Old Orange Airport. Frank at the time was running a Body shop, down the Street from Don’s Shop.He told Frank “You Need to get into Drag Racing, instead of crashing your stock car every week” .Frank DIDN’T know what Drag racing was….so Don Took Him. He couldn’t believe how many people showed up to “watch just two cars race”. Don told him “it’s all about the technology to beat the other guy”. So Frank built a Drag Car…And blew it up on its first run. Had a quick change rear in it and over revved on the line , launching the rear onto the pavement. And So that was the start of Marrattas introduction to Drag Racing….and eventually building Connecticut Dragway.Don is just full of great stories….Don & Smokey…..Part of New England’s Drag Racing History.Without Them…two famous Race Tracks wouldn’t have existed.
….Heres Franks Stock Car prior to him getting into Drag Racing….pretty weird eh?
I believe the picture of Frank in his roundy round was taken at Plainville, Ct. Thats where my love for raceing started also.
