Doing some research for a Magazine Article,,,,,,
Nobody can get anything right…….. 🙄
———————————————————————————————————————————————
1958 Jack and Shirley purchased a ‘Red’ 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne, with a ‘Super Turbo Thrust’ 348/315 HP ‘Tri-Power’ ‘Police Package’.
A Mid-Year production car, with an optional Borg-Warner 4-Speed and a 4.10 Posi-Traction Rear.
The ‘teenage’ {18 Year-old} Shirley drove it, and husband Jack ‘wrenched it’.
It was classed in ‘A/Stock’
They raced it at Fonda (which was an 1/8 Mile Dragstrip) at the time, which ran through the infield of
the Oval Dirt Track.
Fonda Speedway (Wednesday Nights)
They also raced the Biscayne at Montgomery Airport/Dragstrip in 1958, and Fulton Airport/Dragway.
The ‘information I found’ was that the Biscayne (11.0-1 Compression and ‘Solid Camshaft’) should have been classed in S/S, but
the Track Manager’s would let Shirley run in ‘A/S’ which was one class lower, because she was,,,,,,,,,,,,,A Cute Teenage Girl.
It ran (when timed) 14.70’s @ 96 MPH.
The 348/315 HP ‘stick shift’ #3600 lb. Biscayne was ‘a runner’.
Uncle Dino,
I’ll see if I can post the photo of the 1958 ‘red’ Chevrolet Biscayne.
* Classed in ‘A/S’…1958 thru 1960……….Car was running 14.70’s @ 97 MPH
* Classed in ‘B/S’…1961 thru 1962……….Car was running 13.90’s @ 101 MPH
In early-1962, the Muldowney’s sold the 58′ Biscayne and bought a 62’ Corvette {327/300 HP} that they ran in C/SP…
Car was running 13.30’s @ 106 MPH
This ‘street-driven’ Corvette was raced at Dover Drag Strip in 1962 and 1963.
Later in 1963, a hood scoop (Morose-type) was put on the 62′ Corvette.
Other sitings at;
Fonda Speedway……………………….1963
South Glens Falls………………………1963
Milton Speedway (Milton, Vermont)…..1963
Lebanon Valley…………………………1963
Tri-Cities (Endicott)……………………1963
Utica-Rome…………………………….1963
Sometime in late-1963, while racing at Fonda Speedway on a Wednesday Night (after they expanded the track to 1/4 Mile},
Shirley lost control of the Corvette while going though the ‘traps’ and she hit a ‘pole’ along the side of the shut-down area.
The Corvette was ‘split-in-two’ and the fiberglass body was shattered into pieces.
Paulie! I researched too and didn’t find all that….? Were you on the “Argo” team? How do you find this stuff? She messaged me back a year or two ago and didn’t remember much at all. V-Bob says George Brazee remembers beating her good. Now about the “Magazine Article”…curious minds need to know…You do that too? what magazine ? I’ll call up Todd at Kingston Napa and see if I can get more info from his Dad .
I’m the ‘Research King’,,,,,,,,,,
Dino,,,,,,,Why can’t I post any photo’s’

Shirley Muldowney
Dini,
I’ll try to post photo’s.
Her ‘red’ 1962 ‘327/300 HP’ Corvette, which they ran in C/SP (in both 1962 and 1963) had what appeared to be ‘3’ Dover Drag Strip ‘Class Winner’ decals.
This car was wrecked at Fonda Speedway in 1963, when Shirley veered off the track on a Wednesady Night ‘Free-For-All’ Race Event, and hit
a ‘telephone/overhead’ light pole.
man..you’re good at this…Would LOVE a shot of the car with win decals .So …wheres the Little Giant ?…you be the Dover CSI extroidinaire! yeah I spelled that right. 😯
HEY
Give George a call and get the whole story!
