In the 1950s, two All-American icons emerged – the Genie remote-controlled garage door opener and organized drag racing. At the same time the Genie brand began its journey to becoming the most popular garage door opener to homeowners all over the United States, the NHRA Safety Safari was crisscrossing the country, setting up safe drag strip operations. In 1954, the Alliance Manufacturing Company first produced its garage door opener and called it Genie. It was the first mass-produced, radio-controlled, transistorized opener of its kind. Eventually the Alliance Manufacturing Company changed its name to The Genie Company as it became the market leader in design, safety and reliable service – core values that Genie still upholds today. That same year the NHRA formed the Safety Safari and kicked off its 10-stop 1954 tour to educate competitors at small dragstrips across the U.S. The original Drag Safari was made up of a four-man crew who used a station wagon to pull a small camper-type trailer containing all the gear needed to stage a drag race: timing equipment, a PA system, & field telephones.
So what do these two American brand staples have in common now?
Genie is officially interactive in the world of Drag Racing with its sponsorship of the 11th annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags. Dino Lawrence, organizer of the event, announced The Genie Company as the Title Sponsor of the race to be held September 27, 28, and 29. It has become the premier nostalgia drag racing event in the northeast and will be held at Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon, New York. The three-day affair attracts thousands of fans & over 300 racers from eight states and features 200 mph Funny Cars, vintage Gassers, a Car Show on Sunday, and a Flashback Party on Saturday night with a live oldies band.
In 1958, Genie engineers brought about the innovation of the first direct drive screw opener.
