My partner and I had the “token” Ford out of Flips. It was a 69 Mustang with a Bob Brown built Boss 302. Because of his proximity to the New England thruway we always went to National Speedway. He also ran the “Hot and Nasty” big block Chevelle, A Camaro named “Tuff e Nuff” and a Road Runner. Flips a great guy. I was sorry to hear his store closed.

Jan 14, 2009 <——- Last Year ! article in Newspaper
Eastern Westchester’s Central Avenue Doomed By Economy
Businesses Going Out Of Business Along County’s Biggest Shopping Strip

Flip’s Speed Shop on Central Avenue in Westchester was forced to go out of business because of the slow economy. Wednesday’s tumbling stock markets tell the story: businesses are being hit hard and some will never recover.
It’s really becoming evident in major shopping areas including Central Avenue, which runs for eight miles through lower Westchester County. It’s the biggest shopping strip in the county and now something of a boulevard of broken dreams for business owner Flip Bonito.
“Everybody grabbed their pockets, and said, ‘We can’t afford, we’re afraid to spend,'” Bonito told CBS 2.
After 35 years, selling auto parts and speed accessories, Bonito is closing the doors of his Central Avenue store, Flip’s Speed Store. A steady decline in revenue over the years turned steep during the recession, but expenses kept increasing.
“The rents got outrageous,” Bonito said. So he was forced to hang a sign of the times last week, one that takes up a portion of his store front and reads: “Going Out Of Business, Everything Must Go! 50% Off Posted Price” The painful reality sunk in: “It’s just like saying, ‘I give up, the fight is over. You won,'” he said. The final chapter at Flip’s is a story being written all up and down Central Avenue, at small locally-owned stores, and even big national chains. Every strip mall has empty space.

I Read this article and felt bad for FLIP.I am originally from the Bronx and me and Flip go back a along way.I grew up down the street from Flip’s Allerton Ave shop and was part of his White Castle Crew in the 1960’s.We used to make “occasional “trips down the street to the Hutch, I had a 66′ Chevelle at the time and the Flip Man had his Vette. The Mount Vernon guys would hook up with us, Fast Eddie Jackson,Clarance Davenport and from Arthur Ave Louie Mombo with his sleeper 427/l-88 Chevelle.Over the last couple of years I would stop at the store here and there to see how he was doing and he would tell me everybody that comes in is for misc …… The kids of this generation was all building Rice Burners and alot of the guys who came in were using him buying their parts from Summit and coming to him for his wide selection of Earls Fittings and his knowledge of SPEED..It is a real shame what goes on today when a guy like Flip who has always had a solid reputation and put his heart and soul into something for so long has to shut down because of high rent and circumstances out of his control.

Hey Bob, I miss Flip too…..He was hands down a class act, honest, friendly and helpful…He really hooked me up through the years……I ran his name on my car for 2 years………..Years ago I lived not too far from his shop….I lived on Young Ave. right off Allerton. I went to Holy Rosary when I was a kid…..We moved to Westchester and years later after a divorce I moved back to The Bronx….I lived on Tomlinson Ave. in Morris Park and to this day I still miss the old neighborhood badly…About once a month I take a ride down just to see what REAL pizza, REAL bread and REAL pastry tastes like……………..Don………………
