real good article on Junior Stock
heres just part of it:
“So in the Stock classes, cars that ordinary rodders wouldn’t be seen dead in at the drive-in were the hot setup at the dragstrip: four-door sedans, nine-passenger wagons, sedan deliveries. Also Studebakers, Hudsons, ’50 to ’54 Oldsmobiles, ’57 Fords with Paxton blowers, or any vehicle in which the advertised power rating might be underestimated a bit. The racers also attacked another apparent loophole, which allowed any engine in any body style of the same year, as long as they were of the same general family. Suddenly there were fuel-injected ’57 and ’58 Pontiac Chieftains showing up at the track, even though Pontiac offered Rochester FI only in the Bonneville. This same loophole applied to transmissions as well. Since the Borg-Warner four-speed was offered in the Corvette from ’57 on, the NHRA allowed it in fullsize Chevys “
Your right Dino, and by 1970 the NHRA had cracked down on most of these bogus set ups. Pontiac’s lost their optional E3 cams, the ’57, ’58 Chevs lost the 4 speed and of coarse, the 4 speed hydro transmission which had made the Chevy sedan delivery such a winning combination was gone.
A Junior Stock thought,,,,,,,,
At the 1966 Super/Stock Magazine Nationals,,,,,,at New York National Speedway,
Only A/S, B/S and C/S could compete……
Basically big-block musclecars,
*) 1966 Street Hemi’s
*) 1966 SS396 Chevelle’s
*) 1966 Biscaynes 427/425HP
*) 1966 Pontiac Tri-Power GTO’s
*) 1966 Olds 4-4-2 Tri-Power
*) 1966 Cyclone 390
*) 1966 Chevy II 327/350HP
They were considered Top Stock Classes,,,,,,,,,,
Junior Stock was designated for D/Stock and on down,,,,,,,,
I think they were trying to place the Junior Stock, as a car with a 10.00 wt/hp ratio.
Something that the NHRA should have jumped on,,,,,,,,
NHRA ruined the TRi-Five Chevy show,,,,,,by coming up with those stupid rules.

CHECK THIS OUT:
I put this brief slide video together as a ways of helping promote the new book, “Junior Stock; Stock Class Drag Racing 1964-1971”. This was a time in drag racing history like no other. When ingenuity ruled and winners could be built out in the drive way
You got to love the variety of 1960’s stock class drag racing.
The book is scheduled to be released August 15th but can be preorderd now, at online stores on through your local bookstore.
Enjoy and feel free to share it with friends. Dover Photos are included in the book!

Dino, don’t you have a pic of my 72, red, Datsun Pick-up? I ran that thing I think, 19 times and won 18 trophies in P/S. Brian sent me one of me and the truck in the staging lanes.
…………………Mikey 😆
That was the nice thing about the old Junior Stock, their was room for everyone and everything. The variety was great.

Got this From Doug:
This was meant for the Junior Stock book as an added appendix but was overlooked by the publisher. I felt it was an important feature so needless to say, I was a little disappointed it didnt make the cut.
Those interested, google has a 40 page sample of the book posted. Go to the google home page and the google books tab. Just type in Junior Stock: Drag Racing The Family Sedan.

Thanks for posting the above Dino. The book is now available and includes a number of Dover regulars.
I much appreciate the help youve given with the Junior Stock book and Grumpys Toys. People long for the “good old days” of drag racing and books like these and sites like your sure make it easy to see why.
Copies of the book are available through your local book store or through any online store.
Thanks again.
Doug
Great job on the book, brought back some great memories. thanks for the mention of my Dad’s wagon. Lee.
Lee ….best post on Dad’s Wagon! 😆
For you guys ‘not in the know” Lee is referring to his Dad’s “Pied Piper” 427 ’66 wagon:

THINKING……At The 8th Annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags ….JUNIOR STOCK ELIMINATOR …’can it Happen”? ……………
Attention In the Pits.. want you guys to copy/paste/share this …and see what we can ‘pull off’.Considering a JUNIOR STOCK ELIM. at the 8th annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags.. Tri-5 Chevys, sedan deliverys,Fords-Mopars What ever. JUNIOR as opposed to “Super Stock”…We’re looking for ‘flat hood’ real race cars from the period.Mr Boyce should check in here as he did a whole book on it.Make some time shots and dial -in.
…..at a recent York Reunion, they had 14 cool old cars running (playing) on Sunday at Beaver Springs.Just talked to wacky ole ‘Beaver Bob”…He thinks we can draw more from the northeast . I think drawing from northern Pa, Vermont, N.Y. Ct. and Mass we will..Will have to firm up soon before we start our promotions. As always since 2008…we keep the money element out of the mix ,But working on “contingency award certificates’ from some of our fine sponsors to sweeten the pot. Our Dover Eliminators are Run for Trophy-Kool Jacket and metal Dash winners plaque…adding “ELIMINATOR WINNER decals too this year.
