Krabill Falls Short at Famoso
ANAHEIM, CA — Kris Krabill arrived at the 52nd Annual March Meet with great expectations for another all-out assault on the NHRA Heritage Series in Gary Turner’s respected “Pedaler” Nostalgia Funny Car. As things turned out, conditions were better than predicted at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.
In Friday’s single qualifying session, Krabill managed a 6.34-second run at just over 200mph. Kris noted, “I knew it wasn’t pulling as hard as it normally does, but I had to leg it out in case bad weather shortened qualifying. What we found was it broke an exhaust valve 2.5 seconds into the run, so we changed engines for Saturday.” The team’s spare engine was set up with last year’s power and fuel combination, so that gave crew chief, Cory Lee, some added confidence going forward.
Saturday’s qualifying attempt resulted in tire smoke, but Krabill pedaled it immediately before the engine could over rev and destroy itself. Cory Lee added, “We actually learned something from that aborted run, so I still feel like we’re contenders. That landed us 13th in the 32-car field.” Later in the day, track officials were forced to postpone the first round of Eliminations, due to falling temps and deteriorating track conditions, but at least the field was set.
Sunday’s anticipated first-round match-up found the “Pedaler” against Ed Dugan in “The Fighting Irish” Camaro. Kris explained it this way. “I was backing up from the burnout and the car didn’t sound right. But in this game, you always go to the starting line in case something happens in the other lane. A $10.00 part failed in the ignition so when I stepped on the throttle, it caused the engine to misfire. It was mixing up cylinders and spitting raw fuel out the pipes so unfortunately, our day was done. We were hoping to come out swinging this year, but this hasn’t affected our confidence. Gary, Cory and I know we can regroup and get back in stride. Plus, two new crew guys joined the team and our between-rounds maintenance went really smooth, so that shows we’re capable.” The Pedaler crew plans to test at the end of this month in preparation for the 29th Funny Car Fever event at Sacramento Raceway on Saturday, April 24. Qualifying starts at 12:00pm with Eliminations at 3:00pm. For more information, contact 619promotions.com.
