› Forums › Forums › GENERAL DISCUSSION › Poll:Mufflers on race cars?
Morning all,
I’d like to get some opinions on a subject that seems to be growing (or coming back). Some of the new organizations are requiring mufflers to be run during their events. No mufflers..no racing. Now I know race mufflers don’t restrict power and all, but seeing an all out race car make a noise free pass doesn’t seem normal. I’ve been to events where the pits sounded like a cruise nite, even though some mufflered cars ran 7’s and 8’s. Is this our future?? What’s YOUR opinion?? Thanks.

WELL ALONG WITH UNLEADED RACING GAS NOW GOTTA GET USED TO IT . IT DOES SUCKS BUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS ARE DEFINATELY OVER FOR US NOW . UNLESS ITS A NATIONAL EVENT WITH ALL THE TOP FUEL NHRA STYLE CARS THEY MAY BE NEXT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A MUFFLER THAT COULD STAND UP TO 8000 HORSEPOWER THOUGH 😆 FASTLANE. 😎 WE THE BIKE GUYS HAVE BEEN LUCKY WITH NO RESTRICTIONS PUT ON US YET AS FAR AS A MUFFLER LAW RESTRICTION OR WITH ARE OPEN HEADERS
Which organizations….? don’t they realize the spectators come for the “experiance” of ground shaking, nitro sniffing-tire burning and clutch smell….and of course the Sound of Power? must be our “Green -noise pollution- tree hugger idiots ” at work again to protect us from all the “dangers” of this stuff. So stick cotton in your ears ,put on a blind fold on and eat a veggie. Jesh!
If this is the ‘future’ this is ‘very’ sad! How are they going to fabricate a system with race cars without collectors (altereds, gassers, rails, and funny cars)? My first thought in mind, something like a ‘silencer’ on a gun for each individual exhaust pipe? This will ‘definately’ be a ‘trip for high horsepower on blown and injected race cars!I’m with you guys and Dino,LEAVE US BE! This drag racing has been going on since the late 40’s,most all of us that attended in our lifetime, can still hear(other than when our wives, kids, and girlfriends are ‘ragging’ on us).
The problem does not lie within the tracks, or the sanctioning bodies, it lies with the cities, towns, and zoning boards. They have to listen to the NIMBY people. Not In My Back Yard. People who knowingly or not, moved in to a neighborhood that was close to a racing facility of one kind or the other. I don’t think it’s fair, and I don’t think real race cars should have mufflers, ever. If it becomes mandatory, I’ll build “dummy”ones like I did for my circle track cars. I thought they were trying to cut the cost of racing, not increase it. I just hope that the Valley is not on the list of”You gotta have mufflers”, Because that would just plain suck!! …………….Mikey 😮 😯 😆
Many tracks require mufflers on all cars on their Street nights already. Island, Raceway Park and Lebanon Valley I know for a fact. At Etown if you have open headers on a Fri or Sat nite you will be asked to leave, even if you did not unload the trailer. Notice I said street night…it’s not just kids w/imports. There are guys with every possible “street” combo of american muscle running as quick as 7 seconds (1/4 not 1/8)
Etown has test/tune on Wed.nights open headers allowed after 6 pm until 10 pm curfew. Start an open header car BEFORE 6pm …get a ticket or thrown out!! Speaking of curfews…Etown on Sundays (open headers after 10am) ALL I mean ALL racing stops 7:30 pm regardless. I totally understand about noise ordinances, but every year the window of drag racing closes more. 1320 to 1000. Now the big 1/8 mile deal. 1/8 mile on a 1/4 mile track is boring. Even the guys that do it are bickering as the tracks switch it weekly depending on the weather. 1/8 on 1/8 I respect. As far as organizations…Naturally Aspirated Shootout Racing requires mufflers. I tried to put it up for a vote and almost got my head bit off. They say it takes away from the “street” car theme. We keep going like this in 5 years we all will be racing Chevy Volts….no wait the tree huggers will say electric cars give off too much emf’s (Electromagnetic Fields)!!! OK I’m done. Anybody with me on this???
Smitty
Its funny you mentioned the Chevy Volt. There is legislation around to make the Electric cars and Hybrids “noisier” seems that the blind who depend dearly on hearing cannot tell when one of these cars are passing. On the funny side I hear there has been a run on clothe pins and baseball cards in the hybrid parts dept.

Well …we got the E-town deal …Who knows Lebanon’s noise rules?….How about a reverse back-up alarm 😯
BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP,BEEP, BEEP, A hybrid just went by 😆 😆

Please find out about the muffler thing at the Valley. I will either have to make some changes to the car, or stay home. I have NO IDEA what mufflers cost, but I’d bet they are not cheap! I don’t even know if there’s enough room under the car for them. It’s only about 8 months away, guys we need this info ASAP. ……..Mikey 😆
Whoa…..It’s ok fellow ODF’s. On Sat and Sun for the 3rd Dover Nostalgia Drags open headers are NO problem. In fact every weekend at the ‘Valley is ok. I was just saying that street nights/some organizations rules/curfews are all changing our playground. Along with 1/8 mile, throttle stops, delay boxes etc etc. Sorry Mikey if I got you nervous…you’ll be fine.

I’ll go to the source…Wayne & Howie at Lebanon, when ‘Christmas Recess” is over.I’ll get the latest ,they’ve been told by local and NHRA…Looks Ok for now though. That whole E-town thing is Stupid. The Track was there first. People ought to live someplace else ,if they don’t want to hear John Force on a Sunday .
the valley runs OPEN PIPES mickey they are still pretty much in the COUNTRY. i think on evening weekday races you need mufflers.[ STREET NIGHTS? races.]like everything else things evolve. look at dover. some tv person moves into the neighborhood and has some PULL and there are problems. :not too long ago agawam stockcar track had mandatory mufflers rules applied. they ran for a while then the track closed.i think major drag racing will be ok for a while because of all the big money involved but the smaller tracks are on BORROWED TIME. they are turning residential. enough people complain and thats all it takes. look at the reason for bracket racing. i think it was to eliminate classes and get things overwith faster. lets run a VW RABBIT against a blown gasser well just have them post a time they think they’ll run and see who predicts better 🙁 🙁 i think this is why we [OLD TIMERS]LIKE REAL NOSTALGIA RACES. just some of my random thoughts 🙁
Yes Paul, I know that “the times they are a changin'”, but I don’t have to like it, and I don’t. And you’re right, the Valley is kinda country. Englishtown should have fought it, they bring a lot of money into the area from all the racers that come there, especially for big meets. The town should have told the “town criers” to piss off!! And like you this is JMO.
………….Mikey 😆 😥 😆
