In 1970 there was a bunch of us at the berkshires lodge in Wingdale on a saturday nite and we were talking about how we were all going to be Winners on sunday!!!!!!!. This fellow came over to our table and said he was new to the area and over heard us takling about the drag strip and asked were it was and all about it, after a few more BUDS we said we would show him were it was. We drove over there and we just going to turn around at the gate, But it was open so we drove just through the gate when we saw headlights comming up out of the staging lanes so we din’t know what to do so we dove our car behind the building that was just inside the gate area and waited to see who was up at the track on a sat nite. Two cars came down and stopped out side the gate and the two drivers went and closed the gate and locked it. they stood around and talked about who had the faster POLICE car, yes they were police in the police cars drag racing when the track was closed . they got back in there cars and one went towards Wingdale the other went towards Poughkeepsie. Here we are now locked inside the gate at Dover. we parked the car as close to the building so not to be seen by Chet went he opend on sunday and we walked back to SAMS at the railroad tracks and called some one to come get us, ( no cell phones back then ). on sunday morring we were there before any one and waited untill they opened. No one noticed the car so we just drove around the building and went in.FIRST NITE RACE AT DOVER ???????????????.
Was one of the cars white and light blue?….If so, that wouldv’e been Art Winship the local “constable”.
One was a State Trooper and the other was a Dutchess County Sheriff. I mentioned this to some one who said he heard that they would meet there on wed afternoon’s and run there polce cars.
Thats Art….Deputy Sheriff.
up until recent the cops were doing training on the shutdown i know a guy that fishes there and watched them .If they would have opened the track special stuff like testing new cars magazines for photos and more. Brian.
Brian…what did they have for breakfast ? 😆 The “mayor ” of Wingdale …..Brian ‘Knows His Dover”.
