Interesting shot although not at Dover. This is the Swamp Rat 1 ,that never ran Dover.Carburated…it last ran without a blower in 1959.That means this shot must be Montgomery. So, check out the jacket from the ‘Road Aces” -Cold Spring,N.Y. Did they migrate to Dover when Montgomery shut down?.Any old members here?

It was there at Montgomery that Don Garlits with his No. 1 Swamp Rat got beaten by Bert Melody from my home town of Yonkers, N.Y. Bert had a ( get this… ) rear engine blown Cadillac powered dragster…! Maybe it could have been the same day as this photigraph.

Stromberg 97 carberators. Emery Cook, much to the dissatisfaction of his partner Cliff Bedwell had just tought Big Daddy how to jet those carborators to accepl 100% nitro in the tank. Those were the guys who upset Pappy Hart and the other NHRA track owners and that brought about the infamous “Fuel Ban” that didn’t play out until ’64.

All the fuel guys flocked to the AHRA and also the Smoker’s Fuel and Gas Championship March Meet at Famoso where they entertained a 64 car Top Fuel field in six ( 6 ) rounds of serious compatition. You hada’ love it…! Hot Rod Magazine ignored it…!

A little “History” there. Pay attention Brian…!

Trivia: Does anybody remember what we used to call those little attached belts on the back side of men’s trousers that you see there on the “Road Ace: guy…?
