So figuring I’m not getting any younger and that I could be retired in another 3 years, I made the decision it’s time to start do something with the old iron in the yard. This led me to decide to go with the 1964-1/2 Mustang (a former Y/SA with blistering 1/4 mile times in the 19 second bracket back when it wore its original orange paint) which has sat stagnant since about 1980, or the 1965 (originally light blue) which has been lingering off the road for about 25 years itself. Since the ’65 was in much better condition having spent a good chunk of its life in California, Pam and I decided to go with that one since it gave us a better chance to see it through.

Based on the recommendation from Mustang Monthly Magazine, I bought the Auto Twirler Mustang Body cart from Summit Racing. Now to have the bare steel framework zinc and powder-coated in Ford Red to get it ready to mount the ’65 on once the front and rear suspension is removed.

The Mustang Body Cart back from the powder coater.
I use Connecticut Central Coatings in East Hartford.
Gene has been taking good care of me there for several years now.
I chose Ford Red as a test for a future project on the Ford Tractors we have.

Tail lights, gas tank, rear bumper, and rear valance removed.
These Auto Dollies under the wheels are great!

Interior and dashboard are just about out.
Floor pans are not too bad other than some fiberglass cloth and resin patches.

                                Engine, transmission, and radiator removed.
Body still looking pretty solid, but suffering from the dreaded Mustang Cowl Leaks Disease.

Rear and leaf springs dropped out.
These won’t be going back in.

Time to remove the coil springs and front suspension.
This new coil spring tool made for Ford compact and intermediate models is great!
