Dino and Friends,
This may well be my last dispatch to you guys. Billy was released (broke out) from the hospital at about 3:PM this afternoon. Sister Judy was there to assist and drive him home.
I spoke with Billy as they were heading south on I-95 toward his home in Westerly, Rhode Island. He said that he was happy though he felt a bit woozy. “Ya know how you feel after driving in a large diesel truck for awhile? Well, its something like that – but I’m not complaining”.
Not Complaining is an understatement. Anyone who knows Bill, knows that his fuse can be short at times and his tolerance for bureaucracy and stupidity is – should we say – someway limited.
He spent three weeks in great pain, accepting one failure upon another with barely a word. When he swallowed he would wintz but say nothing, saving his pain meds for when he would need then to sleep. He was totally frustrated with all the tubes and wires emanating from a pole and the wall. Just to get out of bed and sit in a chair, he would have to call a nurse. He didn’t want to bother anyone who was reaching to help but eventually, he gratefully accepted the help. While walking his 1/4 mile, he would say hello to anyone who was in the hall. He was always asking about others.
When others asked how he was doing, he would say something like; ‘not bad, not bad. – I’m still here though’ and then laugh. His sense of humor probably did the most to pull him through. That and the visits of his daughter, the irresistible, irrepressable Cheryl. Her visit made all the misery go away.
He read and reread all your greetings, messages and cards repeatedly. Billy and I would sit there and shoot the shit on Super Pumpkin and the wild times “back in the days”
I’m not sure whether Billy will get on-line right away. He may need a few days to reorient himself to just being home and sleeping without being woken up every 20 minutes with beeps going off or a nurse waking him every 2 hours to give him meds.- – – – ya know, the things that we all take for granted every day.
So on behalf of Donna, Cheryl, sister Judy and myself and the rest of Billy’s family, we extend our deepest appreciation to you all, especially Dino. Thanks for being there.
Now on to October !!!!

dinoJust TALKED To Bill on the phone ! he’s doing Good.They where “priming” his food injector pump while we were talking ,so had to cut it short. He’s glad the hospital stay is over and home in the lounge chair, gaining his strength back. Brother Bob there ,but heading back to Wingdale tonight. Really glad I called….He peeked in on the posts …was really gettting a kick out of what every one contributed. Said he’ll be on soon to chat…just resting up now.

I just got off the phone with him about a half hour ago. Right away, I thought that his voice sounded stronger and he seems okay. But he’s down about 20 pounds and he is just getting back to solid food. He gets out a little to the yacht club that he has been a menber of and that’s good. His brother and his wife are with him most of the time. He’s got to go back to Boston to have his stent removed. He’s having a tough time but he’s going to make it.

dinoJust talked to Billy …told him everybody was missing his wisecracks on the forum. He’s Fine…says still gets tired easy, thats why he hasn’t posted up to now…. looks in on us for a little while and then takes a break. They took the stint out last week and this week will take the last “tube’ out. He says it’s hard to do things ,when all this stiff is hanging out of your body. On top of everything ,with all the rain ,his basement flooded with 3 feet of water!.had to clean that up. His brother Bob is a big help,taking to the the hospital for periodic visits. Says he’s going to drive over and see Kevin Dunn…only about 15 minutes away….yeah , he’s back driving ! Talked a lot about the good ole days…even came up with a new topic idea : “Your First Win …I’ll start it with his story …..It’s in ” Bench Racing from the Past .”
dino10:45 TODAY …..Video Bob just knocked on Bill Casey’s door for a Surprise Visit…Has DvDs of last weeks Funnycar Reunion and photos for him. We beamed V-Bob in from DDS.com headquartes via cell phone and GPS -MapQuest to take him right to his door! …Surprise! Billy will be blown away…Dover Guy Home visitation service, compliments of good ole Attic rat BOB .
