Bill,
Was that max wedge green? I have a slight recall of sitting in english class at CCHS in 64 and watching a green mopar pull into the loop at school.(maybe dropping your brother off?) It was a spring day and the windows were open. There was a sudden sound of a mopar reving and as the car came into view, I want to believe that smoke was still coming from the tires as it headed towards NYMA. Could that have been you??
It might have been Bill dropping someone off, or just coming ’round to show off, but I wasn’t in high school yet. It was only solid green in ’64, by ’65 we had the white side panels on it. Mom was a library assistant, and she’d drive it to school every now and again. Like ‘Bill said, when she got her 440 GTX, she didn’t drive the max wedge anymore.
Dang sure wish I was a little older and had met you all you guys were livin, that was a Cool family grocery getter I would have remember your car for sure but I don’t think I ever a saw it bummer at that……
Yes I know and remember the 5 corners , I bet the Storm King also had a hard time at the old Quaker Ave ramp into Cornwall it was steep and on a slope at the stop sign my Challenger with the 4 speed in the rain would spin and go side ways every time……..
They’ve re-routed that road, really ruined it IMO. I always knew it as “Thompson’s Hill”, have no idea where that came from but its what Mom and Dad always called it. I used to love laying into Mom’s GTX up that thing, the 440 really liked to show off its torque. I didn’t enjoy getting up it with my Morris Minor, though.

“Hi Dino,
Was wondering if you could send me a higher resolution version of this Doc Burgess / Black Arrow photograph, taken by Charles Irving. I came across a copy of this image on your website, posted Oct. 6, 2008:
The car dealership listed on the left hand side of the vehicle Glean Chrysler-Plymouth, Inc. (1963-1967), which later became Glean Ford, Inc. (1967-1974) was located at 1024 Route 22, Pawling, New York, and it was owned by my great-uncle.
If you happen to have any others shots of the Black Arrow that show the “Glean” name, I’d appreciate anything you’d be willing to send my way.
Although I’m not too much into drag racing, I am certainly an avid collector of family history memorabilia.
Many thanks!”

It looks like the Black Arrow is classed in S/US,,,
which I guess would be Super/Unlimited Stock, or the 2800 lb. class,,,,,,
Too bad all those beautiful 1965 Plymouth/Dodge Super Stock cars were forced to go AWB,,,,,,to make money..
Just not enough ‘cash’ in Super Stock in 1965 thru 1967.
pc
I believe that rather obscure classification was actually “Super/Ultra Stock”…
Reading the Bill Grumpy Jenkins book,,,,,,,,,
It states that he first ran the ‘Black Arrow’ at Cecil County Dragway,,,,,,,,,,,,on January 3, 1965
Sunday, January 3,,,,,,,,,,,Can that be possible…????
And 11.20’s with 7″ slicks in S/SA.
I’m quite certain Doc just put the track’s name on there to support his local folks. I don’t see Dover paying any $$$ for that.
As for Glean, local “sponserships” back in the day usually consisted of an occasional free set of spark plugs or oil. Since that name was only on the car a very short while, I’d suspect Doc put it there after some preliminary talks with them in hopes he could entice them to do something with him, but when they didn’t show interest, he removed it. I don’t think the Glean name made it to the end of ’65 on the car…
That photo is from the 1965 Super Stock Magazine Nationals @ York US 30 Dragway (Pennsylvania).
Date; August 7th and 8th, 1965
The ‘Black Arrow’ was entered in Super/Stock Eliminator (3400 lb. cars)
Was Doc doing the driving out there, or was Grumpy Jenkins.
A month later, ‘Doc’ and Gurmpy Jenkins were together at the 65′ Indy Nationals, running the ‘Black Arrow’ in A/MP.
They won the A/MP class, but were knocked off in the Street Eliminator handicapped run-off’s.
Glean Chrysler-Plymouth, right in the Village of Pawling.
Got some tid-bits from an ex-employee, who said they chipped in with some parts, oil, filters, lube and spark plugs, and a bit of travel cash $$.
They were encouraged to kick in a few bucks to ‘Doc’ from the Chrylser-Plymouth Region Zone Office.
Maybe a few hundred dollars in total.
Short term sponsor deal that lasted a couple of months,,,,,,,,,,
