We are Awesome!! Born between 1925-1970
No matter what our kids
and the new generation think about us,
WE ARE AWESOME !!!
OUR Lives are LIVING
PROOF !!!
To Those of Us Born
1925 – 1970:
At the end
of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don’t read anything else,
please
read what he
said.
Very well stated,
Mr. Leno.
~~~~~~~~~
TO ALL THE
KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930s, ’40s, ’50s,
’60s and ’70s!!
First, we survived
being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank
while they were
pregnant.
They took aspirin,
ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.
Then, after that
trauma, we were
put to sleep
on our tummies
in baby cribs
covered
with bright colored
lead-based paints.
We had no
childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
and, when we
rode our bikes,
we had baseball
caps,
not helmets, on
our heads.
As infants and
children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts,
no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..
Riding in the
back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water
from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one
soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes,
white bread, real butter, and bacon.
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And we weren’t overweight.
WHY?
Because we were
always outside playing…that’s why!
We would leave
home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights
came on.
No one was
able to reach us all day.
–And, we were
OKAY.
We would spend
hours building
our go-carts out
of scraps
and then ride
them down the hill,
only to find
out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned
to solve the problem..
We did not
have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were
no video games,
no 150 channels on cable,
no video movies
or DVDs,
no surround-sound or
CDs,
no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and
no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
and we went
outside and found them!
We fell out
of trees, got cut,
broke bones and
teeth,
and there were
no lawsuits
from those accidents.
We would get
spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand,
and no one would call child services to report abuse.
We ate worms,
and mud pies
made from dirt,
and
the worms did
not live in us forever.
We were given
BB guns for our 10th birthdays, 22 rifles for our 12th, rode horses,made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and
-although we were
told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes
or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
walked in and talked to them.
Little League had
tryouts
and not everyone
made the team.
Those who didn’t
had to learn
to deal with
disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing
us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have
produced some of the best risk-takers,
problem solvers, and inventors ever.
The past 50
to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas.. We had freedom,
failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of those born
between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kidsbefore the lawyers
and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are t it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents
were. Kind of makes
you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it ?
The quote of the month
by
Jay Leno:
“With hurricanes, tornados,
fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the
country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist
attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?”
For those that
prefer to think that God is not watching over us…go ahead and delete this..
For the rest
of us…..
please pass this
on, thanks.
Hey, V Bob, did you see John Rupoli at Englishtown? I saw the picture of his nephews car, the old Sanzo Willy’s. John said he was flying up to work on the car, then coming back Sunday night or Monday. ……………Mikey 😆
Mikey,according to what V Bob told me,they unloaded the Willys off the trailer,but young Frankie decided not to run it.V Bob said he was busy with his own drag car (the Vega) and didn’t have much time to socialize,so I don’t know if he hooked up with young Frankie’s Uncle John? It’s a ‘sin’ they way the Willys looks with the picture Smitty placed on the forum.Only hope some day it’ll be restored as good as Vinnie Musicaro did on Jack Merkel’s old all glass 33 Willys AA/GS.
not all of us are “well heeled” and can afford $$$ to spend on restoration of that size. look at AL.D’s willys. besides some cars are worth more UNRESTORED! the fact that the car was at the track and able to RUN ,i tip my hat to the owner
I hate to say this, but the kid doesn’t really give a damn. Also, Uncle John and Frank jr. don’t really get along well, mostly for that reason. And you’re correct, that car looks like crap, also the blower is gone, and a few other things. As for money, this particular car would take a bunch more time than money, it’s a running, race-able car. Someone with a little know how could restore that car without spending a lot of money. I’m gonna talk to John and see if he can talk Frank jr. into bringing it up to the Valley, he could ride up with Maso and I. ………………Mikey 😆
SuperSport Pete,sounds like I ruffled your feathers a bit by what you said;please accept my apologies,Mikey and I agree,it wouldn’t take much to restore Sanzo’s old Willys.A bit of fiberglass repairs,mainly to the glass nose,a duplicate candy-flake red paint job with gold accents,and perhaps lettering.The chassis,drivetrain,are in great shape,and it’s certified to run!Yeah,it’s missing the blower,however,that’s an option at this point. No doubt about it S/S Pete,things are tight nowadays;if I were young Frankie,I’d check around his area for schools (like BOCES) that have classes in automotive body repairs,and his Willys would be like a class ‘project’,to perform the body work and paint.All Frankie would have to pay for is paint and materials.This is only one idea,I’m sure there’s others.Years ago,all us ‘motorheads’ had good buddies with skills to help build your race car,just for the fun of it.Maybe some of Frankie’s old buddies are still around to help? Mikey! Can’t wait to see ya,and your beautiful Willys run the Valley! See ya soon my friend!
Well lookie here,
Seems like we have a difference of opinion! I saw the car in person. Definitely a DIAMOND in the rough. The fact the car is still here is a blessing…while pitted with V Bob and Paul I actually mentioned if it might be for sale. If there is one thing that kills this hobby is bankers, doctors, movie stars and other NON automotive people that “over restore” classics. I race alot at different venues and was VP at NY state’s largest weekly car cruise. I see it all the time. Not everyone has Barrett-Jackson pockets. There is alot to be said for unrestored originals. I say get the car up to 2011 NHRA specs, put in a mild BB Chevy ,PowerGlide with brake and make some easy 9 second passes!! But that’s just my .02. Others would like to make it a “fullscale” Revell model to cart to shows and have it never get caught in the rain.
🙄 i actually had the car bought before i got our steel willys. 😮 repoli backed out of the deal then changed his mind again and said ok 🙄 🙄 the car has real sentamental value to him and he loves it. by then we had the ll willys paid for. VIDEO BOB will tell you the story. he got us togather for the deal. everything including the trailer was the deal. 🙁 🙁 🙁 and yes the car is rough its been through a lot of hands&had olds &buick motors in it through the years the islanders car club ran it years ago. bob has many pictures of it through the years. now has 427 bbc with single4bbl on it th400 still the olds rear in it. don long front axle. yes a diamond in the ROUGH!!! the way i understand it the car was built side by side with merkels car ran blown small block in those days
Here is an idea for Dino 😕 . Find out if the car is for sale, get a price, and then see if you can get donations from us DDS members to purchase the car, “clean it up”, just the body and paint, some engine work, at least injectors or multiple carbs 😮 . It could be kept at Dino’s or wherever, and raced at special events, or brought to shows 😯 . Pick the driver by a raffle system, $5 bucks per ticket, no minimum, and the money goes to buy fuel 😀 . It would be like a “Club Car” 😎 . I’m sure that there are members out there that would be willing to “donate” some parts, and maybe some labor 🙄 . The parts could even be “loaners” for the duration 😉 . Just a thought, guys. We could do this. ………………….Mikey 😆
If memory serves me Paul B. is right.Both Sanzo’s and Merkel’s ‘glass’ 33 Willys were built side by side in late 66 or early 67,Eddie’s a blown small block BB/GS,and jack’s a blown big block AA/GS.I’m not sure,I believe either late 68 or 69,Eddie Sanzo started his own business called Dyna-Tech,(this replaced the ‘Vitar lettering on the doors),and he replaced the small block with a big block blown running the AA/GS class.( I’m almost sure it was a 427 like Merkels).He sold the Willys to Vinnie Crawford (‘Islanders’).I remember it being in a car show in N.Y.City,with the hood lettered with ‘Vinnie and Pablo’,that was either 70 or 71 I believe.Seeing the future Eddie put together a 70 or 71 Camaro to run A/MP,and eventually I think early Pro/Stock.The driver was I believe Tony Russo (of the famous ‘Russo and Santo’ C/G willys now restored and running by John and Jack Olcott of “East Coast Gassers club they started).I lost track of who might have owned it after Vinnie Crawford,however when Frank Rapoli Sr.bought it,it was in great shape,with a blown 427 big block.Frank told me he removed the blower (too expensive to run for him) and replaced it with a 4bbl.(more consistent and reliable).Hopefully,and again this is “MY’ opinion,like to see it again,close to being restored to the way Eddie Sanzo had it.I rest my case.
Great history lessons on the Sanzo Willys, Paul and Babycakes!! This is what the Dover heritage is all about…keeping it alive and fresh. To guys like me, a hair too young to remember the mid ’60’s, this helps to put it all together. Mikey…EXCELLENT idea. If we could pull this off…what a treat to have every Dover event. For now lets get them to go to the Valley this year.
“Club Car”… Cool…!!! 😆
