Gothca Don …good idea
I might go to the Charlotte Z-Max NHRA event tomorrow. It has only a $10.00 ticket but it goes up a lot for Saturday and Sunday. I wish I could afford a weekend ticket. I only live a few miles from there. I suppose the Laganas will be there. I will report back later.

Going up to the Valley with my friend Frank Gaizo tomorrow there is an open track rental day. Going to work on dialing in his Nova. The MG will be going to a few car shows but racing is over for this year. The belts expired Aug 30, 2011 and I need a 5 layer jacket so we are going to get the stuff fresh for next year. I worked on the front end and figured out how to adjust it. It’s better now we are going to get it “best”. Over the winter (in between skiing) we are going to find a few more inches (no not in the engine) in the cockpit. My goal is to be out with the car on opening day at the track.

Just got a call from Frank , seems his trailer brakes aren’t working so he will be repairing that instead of testing.
Oh well, Pat

I’m back from the first day. Mayby I will go again tomorrow.
The Charlotte Z-Max facility is colosal, I have never seen anything like it. They have grandstands that reach up into the ozone layer and elevators to take you there for the covered club house seats. They have tunels that run under the track so you can cross over to the other side. They are not going to use the four lane format at this event. ( That’s good…! ) Excellent bath rooms and concessions, totally state of the art and pleanty of pit area too.
If you go there… bring a good hat, there is almost no shade anywhere.
The Laganas are there. I saw Bobby Jr. and Dominick and two crewmen taking care of details, but time trials for nitro cars will start tomorrow. Bobby invited me to “hang out” with them but I don’t want to make a pest of myself. Bob Sr. will be there tomorrow. Their engine is intact and they had a spare set of cylinder heads on the shop table. They’ve come a long way since the old ramp trailer, I must say. I hope they do this weekend what they did in Las Vegas…!
Also…
Tommy Ivo’s four engined Buick monstrocity is there on display at the O’Riley pavilion. The workmanship on that car is stupendous, but… WHAT WAS IVO THINKING…??? That thing has got to go straight every time because… there is no effective way to steer it. How are you gonna’ crank two nine inch slicks through a steering shaft connected to a small gear box…?!
Attn: Dino
Shape up and meet me there… 😛
…….. “MASO” pictures ❗ ❗ …………………………. 😮
No pictures. My camera took a great big crap.
I got there this morning at about noon. The weather was very cool but with some humidity. By mid afternoon the humidity came down for what would be perfect drag racing weather for nitro cars, and the first day of time trials was spectactular because of it. Nitro cars lined up at 5:30 PM and again at 8:00 PM. I did not see one nitro car either go up in tire smoke or blow raw fuel out the headers and that’s saying something. Some did shut down however by magnito switch.
At 5:30… Dominick was brought up in the third line up and cranked off a cool 3.922 @ 313 mph for the 10th spot. But eventually Larry Dixon blew everybody out of the water with a spectactular pass of… ( get this… ) 3.74 @ 324 mph…!
Then, at 8:00… Dom’s pass was not good. He fell flat at about half track and just sort of sputtered over the 1,000 foot finish line. I hope they can improve their standing tomorrow. The third line-up will be at noon and the fourth at 2:00 pm but I probably won’t be there.
T.V. Tommy Ivo was there and I spoke to him. I bought a copy of his book: “T.V. Tommy Ivo, Drag Racing’s Master Showman, by Tom Cotter” and he autographed it with “To Tom, These were the best of times – TV Tommy Ivo” I read half of it, up to page 114 while sitting in the grandstands before I left at 11:00 PM. Drag Racing is the only sport in the world where the fireworks display at the end of the event is truly anti climatic.
Chris karamasenes was there with a Top Fueler. That man never gives up. He made two very poor time trials. I saw Darryl Gwynn and Don Garlits was supposed to be there too but I didn’t see him.
I’m not going there tomorrow but maybe I will for the Sunday eliminations.
just tracked down Brian…he’s rummaging through the isles at the Stormville Swap & Flea market ,looking for Dover Relics.Anybody go to Torrington last night ? and maybe took thier Camera?
Well…
It looks like Dominic qualified at number 15 after the fourth round of qualifying today and I wasn’t there. I guess that means that he will square off against Spencer Massey in the second line-up of the first round of eliminations tomorrow morning with out lane choice. Maybe I will go.
Dom made three qualifying runs below four seconds and one botched out pass with some tire spin according to NHRA dot com. But I never saw any tire smoke from any nitro cars all day on Thursday. I wonder why that is… Could there be something different about the Z-Max’s surface or their lighting…? Anyway… there is a lot to be said about consistancy in this game. Let’s see what happens tomorrow and maybe I will go.
It doens.t look like anyone’s really interested around here though… 😐
